On demand book publishing technology makes it cost efficient to produce one book at a time or a small number of books verses a large number of books.
Academia and the commercial world of printed materials us on demand book publishing companies to print a few copies of books. There are several uses for these books on demand book publishing. The commercial world usually prints several advanced copies of books for reviewers. This is so they have them and hopefully read and pronounce it a good read in their reviews. Or editors to shop the book around. For academia, they want a sample of what is out there before teaching their students.
Trading lower startup costs for smaller per book profits are what some independent publishers do with on demand book publishing. This is a more economical fulfillment method, and then there are the on demand book publishing based companies that charge a fee for this service which are called vanity publishing or self-publishing in which you do all the work yet are charged a fee.
Created more for the writers than for marketers of large, bestselling novels, on demand book publishing companies aren’t publishers in a conventional sense. Anyone can be a published writer, the on demand book publishers don’t screen submissions, except maybe for pornography or hate language, and they do not edit, proofread or market your book. However, some on demand book publishing companies will offer these services for an additional ‘add-on’ fee. They will print anyone willing to pay. Beware, most times, the title belongs to the on demand printer and can be sold elsewhere. Check your contract carefully. Payment for them to sell your book is a royalty based pay. The beginning writer might want to print a few dozen copies of a memoir to give to family and friends for gifts, or a cookbook or genealogy report. These are a few reasons the novice writer might choose on demand printing. And the experienced writer might choose on demand printing want to print a few dozen copies of an out-of-print book for fans of the no longer printed best seller from long ago. There is no need for hundreds of books only family and friends will want to read or a few fans from the past. If you are a new author wanting to make a name for yourself and ‘run with the big boys/girls on the best sellers list’, then on demand printing is not for you. With only a few copies printed at a time and most sold to the author for friends and family, or local (to the writer) bookstores, it is not worth the time or trouble. Besides you have to pay an extra fee for proofreading and editing, which the large publishing houses do for you as part of your contract.
